FUKUSHIMA ECOCIDE NEWS ROUNDUP - FEBRUARY 8, 2014

We are approaching the third anniversary of the Fukushima disaster and all we do is:

-  Ignore it or play down its significance
-  Monitor the damage on the biosphere - not necessarily the spread of radioactivity
-  Feel sorry for animal and human victims
-  Speculate on the many apocalyptic possibilities

And that's it.

The scientific community has been disgracefully quiet.  They, who should have been at the forefront of a world-wide movement to denounce the nuclear industry, and to organize to learn as much as possible from the Fukushima disaster, and to brainstorm for ways of mitigating the damage, are for the most part conspicuous for their silence.

You hear a statement of dismay and concern here and there, but all in very measured tones, so as not to alarm the population too much, and above all, not to bring attention to themselves from the scientific establishment.  If they say too much their grants, their careers, and their reputation could be put at stake

And us?  Those of us who are aware of the situation at least in general terms are also like deer in the headlights.  Normally it would not take much to organize people around other issues, but this one that threatens the life and health of the biosphere does not seem to merit enough urgency or interest.  We are not even demanding information or proper monitoring from our authorities, or the dismantling of those weapons of mass destruction in our cities called nuclear power plants.

Our authorities take advantage of our confusion and indifference.  They restrict radiation monitoring.  They don't want to alarm us.  They don't want to upset the nuclear industry.  They don't want to upset the fishing industry and their profits.  So they too are complicit in their silence or their misleading reassurances that everything is still within (the ever rising) "safe radiation levels".
