Patches of barren land in the Namib desert are due to grasses competing for scarce water, says scientist.
Stronger types of grass soak up nutrients, leaving the weaker ones to die. This causes a barren patch of land that can be 2 to 12 meters in diameter.
Explanatory theories have included grass-killing gas, termites and even UFOs while local myth holds that a fire-breathing dragon lives beneath the Earth and burns the vegetation.
