SOLAR POWERED PLANE TAKES OFF
The Solar Impulse runs on about the same power as a motor scooter and stores power from 12,000 solar cells built into the wings in batteries so it can fly at night.
Its first flight will start from San Francisco and will go across the United States. It will take place in segments with a total of 19 hours spreadover a period of two months with an average speed is 43 miles per hour, or 69 km per hour.
It was designed for flights up to 24 hours at a time, but the next model will allow for up to five days and five days of flying by one pilot. Meditation and hypnosis were part of the training for the pilots, as they prepared to fly on very little sleep.
The downside of a solar-powered aircraft is its tiny carrying capacity and massive wings.
