GEOLOGY NEWS -

DEEP WITHIN THE MANTLE HIDE OLD TECTONIC PLATES

RECENTLY DISCOVERED, THEY WILL REWRITE GEOLOGIC HISTORY

For the last forty years we were taught that the American northwest by the movement of an undersea plate called Farallon pushing against the continent.

In a startling review, geologists have now discovered that it was not just one plate but several that have been pushing east, to produce those crustal wrinkles we know as the Rockies. Those other plates are hiding 500 to 1200 miles deep within the mantle, German and Canadian geologists have used seismic tomography or earthquake shockwaves to detect these plates and produce a 3-D map. See illustration and more data, including interesting map of ancient continents here:

For geology buffs and anyone interested in ancient inner Earth mapping, read book Ghost Mountains and Vanished Oceans which describes a study done in the Canadian Shield, which has some of the most ancient Earth crust in the globe. It is full of fascinating information about continent formation. I loved it.
