KNOWINGLY SETTING UP THE FUTURE NUCLEAR CONTAMINATION OF A GREAT LAKE

Nuclear Dumb and Dumber in Canada

By John LaForge

The thought “Dumb and Dumber” came to mind as I recorded the work of Canada’s Joint Review Panel Sept. 23 and 24, here in Ontario, on the east end of Lake Huron.

The JRP is currently taking comments on a proposal to dump radioactive waste in a deep hole, 1mile from the shore of this magnificent inland sea.

What has to be called just plain dumb, is that the nuclear bomb industry branched out to build nuclear power reactors and, as E.F. Schumacher said, to “accumulate large amounts of highly toxic substances which nobody knows how to make safe and which remain an incalculable danger to the whole of creation for historical or even geological ages.”

Unfortunately in the case of radioactive waste this has happened here, in Canada, etc.

Then, the giant Canadian utility Ontario Power Generation (OPG) proposes to bury its radioactive waste in a limestone dug-out, or “deep geologic repository,” one mile from the Great Lake Huron.

The low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste that could be dumped in a 2,200-foot deep hole here — 200,000 cubic meters of it — contains long-lived, alpha radiation emitters like plutonium, the most toxic substance on Earth, which is dangerous for 240,000 years (10 half-lives).

Yet the reactor operator, Ontario Power Generation, had the nerve to say in a 2008 public handout: “[E]ven if the entire waste volume were to be dissolved into Lake Huron, the corresponding drinking water dose would be a factor of 100 below the regulatory criteria initially, and decreasing with time.”

This flabbergasting assertion prompted me to say to ask the oversight panel, “Why would the government dig a 1-billion-dollar waste repository, when it is safe to throw all the radiation into the lake?” The panel members must have considered my question rhetorical because they didn’t answer.

There is much concern among Canadians over the fact that their government’s allowable limit for radioactive tritium in drinking water is 7,000 becquerels-per-liter.

In the U.S., the EPA’s allowable limit is 740 bq/L — a standard almost ten times more strict. (A Becquerel is a single radioactive disintegration per second.)

Tritium is the radioactive form of hydrogen, it can’t be filtered out of water, and it is both dumped and vented by operating nuclear reactors, and can leak from radioactive wastes in large amounts.

LOVE BUGS - DAMSELFLIES LOVINGLY HOLD HANDS AS THEY REST ON A FLOWER

Bug romance in the Italian countryside photographed by Alberto Ghizzi Panizza near the River Po.

Struck by their cute poses, he took shots of the damselflies shortly after dawn as they rested on wild flowers.

Mr Panizza said: 'I found these cute insects' expressions very funny.'  The morning was cold and wet but they seemed to like being perched on the branches and flowers.

Before mating damselflies spend some considerable time in physical contact with one another, which scientists believe is to assess their potential mate.

DOG HEROES SAVE CHILDREN IN TWO SEPARATE EVENTS

Baby's best friend: Heroic dog saves young child by lying in its way to stop it crawling into the sea

A dog became the hero of the day when it saved a baby from going into the water on a beach in Turkey.

In a true display of what it means to be man's best friend, the dog was filmed coming to the rescue when the child crawled towards the waves.

The pet dashes after the child heading for the sea, and lying down in the baby’s way.

The child is seconds away from the shoreline when the dog stands in its way, stopping it from reaching the water.

Guide Dog Dies After Incredible Act of Loyalty, Self-Sacrifice

A guide dog’s life is one of service. And a boxer trained as a seeing-eye dog, belonging to an Atlanta man, committed the ultimate act of service, laying down his life for his family.

The dog named Simon helped lead legally blind Dave Furukawa for four years, but died after a car accident Monday where he helped helping protect his owner’s son, Will.

Furukawa told the local news station he was walking his son to school when a car ran through a stop sign.

The 80-pound dog pushed the child out of the way, but was hit by the vehicle himself.

Furukawa was hit as well.“What people have said is that Simon either got up or jumped out, and pushed my son out of the path of the car,” said Furukawa.

Furukawa told WXIA the dog did get up and followed the boy who was rushed home, but “once he was sure Will was okay, he laid down.”

Simon died with a broken leg and internal injuries as his family took him to the vet.

WXIA reported police saying Calvin Armour was charged with running the stop sign and failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

A PHOTOGRAPHER IS JUMPED BY A PACK OF WILD WOLVES WHO THEN PROCEED TO KISS HIM!

Is there a chance that he had previously befriended them?  Just wondering.

Daily Mail - In a bizarre clip that is both heart-warming and strange, five grey wolves kiss and cuddle a photographer - who is happy to join the pile of love.The pack starts by circling each other and wild life photographer Monty Sloan on a lake-side green at the Wolf Park in Battle Ground, Indiana.

Mr Sloan is poised to take a picture but it seems he cannot resist returning the sharp-fanged animals' affection.

Alarmingly, in the Park's description of the pack, they explain that they are 'very friendly' to their prey - but sources insist this was a moment of genuine affection.

'Wolves do not growl or snarl at their prey,' the guide explains, 'It would be like a human getting angry at an ice cream cone he or she was about to eat!

Wolves who are hunting look very excited and happy, even “friendly”.'

But tumbling around on the floor, these animals show no sign of cunning.They climb on each other to lick his face and nuzzle his head.

Incredibly, the fearless animal lover kisses them back.

Wolves social hierarchy

Unlike their cousins - dogs - these animals are instinctively wild, with a strict code of conduct based on hierarchy within their pack.

There is one line of rank for males and one for females.The alpha male and female lead their packs.

Second in command is the beta male or female.

Although there are leaders and weaklings, it is not always survival of the fittest.

It is always the hungriest that gets to eat first, not necessarily the biggest.

Working together, they ensure each member has a role to play and none are neglected.

Contrary to popular belief, wild wolves are not dangerous.

FLESH EATING BACTERIA - THREE FACTS

1. The bacteria aren’t actually eating your flesh. The various species—including some that cause strep and staph—enter a wound, scrape, or bug bite and unleash a flood of toxic chemicals that kill surrounding tissue cells.

2. At least 650 cases crop up each year in the US—and about a quarter prove fatal.

3. One common flesh-eating bacterium, Streptococcus pyogenes, has yielded a new kind of molecular superglue.

This bug makes an ultrasticky protein that helps it invade human cells.

But disassembled in the lab, that protein has been used to lock distant molecules together—even at high temperature and in acidic environments.

NORTH CAROLINA STUDENTS SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL FOR NOT BEING VACCINATED

A North Carolina law is keeping hundreds students around the state from attending classes. Upwards of 400 students have been suspended from their school for failing to receive a Tdap shot.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Tdap vaccination shot is a combination of three vaccines that protect adolescents and adults from tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

As of this past Thursday, any public school student who did not provide proof of vaccination was restricted from attending classes.

TOXIC ADJUVANT BEING ADDED TO OUR VACCINES - SAME ONE BLAMED FOR GULF SYNDROME IN SOLDIERS USED AS GUINEA PIGS

US soldiers used as guinea pigs.

"For the past 64 years, the United States Military and other agencies within our government have used our servicemen and women as test subjects, oftentimes in secret and without informed consent," explained Air Force Capt. Richard Rovet.

"In December of 1994, the United States Senate released a report titled, 'Is military research hazardous to a veteran's health? Lessons spanning half a century' ... [that] outlines the unethical use of servicemen and women as test subjects, guinea pigs."

At a 2010 gathering of the American Rally for Personal Rights in Chicago, registered nurse and retired Air Force Captain Richard Rovet warned his listening audience about the dangers of squalene MF59, the devastation and horrors of which he witnessed first hand during his time in the service.

The experimental oil-in-water adjuvant, which was forced on all servicemen beginning in 1999 via the mandatory anthrax vaccine, caused many of Capt. Rovet's comrades to suffer severe and permanent side effects.

After establishing that squalene MF59 was admittedly experimental, Capt. Rovet went on to explain how the U.S. government willfully ignored all documented evidence showing that the anthrax vaccine, and squalene MF59 in particular, was directly responsible for triggering an epidemic of Gulf War syndrome that left hundreds of thousands of servicemen seriously injured or dead.

Not only this, but the U.S. Department of Defense actually ordered that both the anthrax vaccine and a related botulism toxoid vaccine, both of which contained experimental squalene MF59, not be annotated in soldiers' medical records -- they were instead generically identified as "Vac A" and "Vac B" in order to conceal their identity.

"Roughly one in four of the 697,000 veterans, my brothers and sisters who served in the first Gulf War, are afflicted with Gulf War illness ... [and] study after study shows a higher rate of Gulf War illness in vaccinated veterans.

That's a fact," added Capt. Rovet. "Military members can be ordered to take medicines and vaccines against their will, or be imprisoned and discharged from the armed forces with a criminal record for the rest of their lives, right up there with rape perpetrators."

Novartis now using MF59 in Fluad influenza jab, investigational swine and bird flu vaccines

Switzerland-based drug giant Novartis admits that squalene MF59 is currently being used in its Fluad influenza vaccine, which is used in Italy, as well as in pandemic influenza vaccines like Aflunov that are currently in development.

ABUSED DOG TOO TERRIFIED TO LIFT HIS HEAD LEARNS TO TRUST AND LOVE HUMANS AGAIN

Thanks to a loving family, the dog not only regained his trust in people, but also recovered from an illness that could have taken his life anytime.

A dog that was too terrified to lift its head after suffering from vicious abuse is now a happy, healthy, confident canine thanks to its new owners.

The German Shepard mix, now named Apollo, was once in the care of a San Antonio, Texas animal care facility, where he was pictured cowering in a corner with his head hung low.

Staff at the facility said he appeared terrified of humans.  A couple took a chance on him, however, and helped him gain trust in humans again. Now he's become the gentle, loving companion to their newborn baby.

Signs of abuse

Before arriving at the shelter someone tried to tattoo his underbelly in green.  He hates drainage ditches of all kinds. One of his ears does not stand up due to either a dog fight or lack of essential nutrients and chewing in his early months. He was also diagnosed as distemper positive, and very much on the edge of losing his life.  Terrified of humans he did not dare to lift his head.

Rescued by love

His new family was warned that he wold never be a good family pet because he was not properly socialized.  But they took a chance on him and now he is a happy, loving, healthy and well adjusted family dog - a gentle companion for the couple's new baby.

His family says:  "You should have seen how excited he was when we fed him in those first few months.'  He recovered entirely from his illness.   Slowly, he became the best dog, even at times very cuddly.   His favorite thing on the planet is our morning walks.  He is our tiny dachshund's best friend in the world.   Recently we had a baby, and from the moment we brought our baby home, Apollo adopted the baby as if he were his own puppy."

IRAN HACKED NAVY COMPUTERS

As President Obama appeals for better relations with Iran, unnamed U.S. officials are pointing fingers at Iranian hackers for spying on U.S. Navy computers.

U.S. officials are saying that Iranian government or state-sponsored hackers penetrated an unclassified U.S. Navy computer network used for email and the “service’s internal intranet,” the Navy Marine Corps Internet, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The most recent incident occurred last week, said the officials. No sensitive information was stolen, nor were the email accounts of top officials compromised.

Hackers used an unsophisticated means to penetrate the network, revealing a weakness in the Navy’s system, the officials said.

MAPS SHOW HOW NORTH AMERICA LOOKED LIKE 500 MILLION YEARS AGO

If you ever decide to travel back in time 500 million years, make sure you take these maps along with you.  The continent did not look like anything you are familiar with now.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2434633/What-North-America-looked-like-550-million-years-ago.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What you'd find 500 million years ago:
500 million years ago was at the end of the period called Cambrian Explosion, when life forms proliferated into countless species, in accelerated evolution.
For most of the nearly 4 billion years that life has existed on Earth, evolution produced little beyond bacteria, plankton, and multi-celled algae.
But beginning about 600 million years ago in the Precambrian, the fossil record speaks of more rapid change.
First, there was the rise and fall of mysterious creatures of the Ediacaran fauna, named for the fossil site in Australia where they were first discovered.
Some of these animals may have belonged to groups that survive today, but others don't seem at all related to animals we know.
Then, between about 570 and 530 million years ago, another burst of diversification occurred, with the eventual appearance of the
lineages of almost all animals living today.
This stunning and unique evolutionary flowering is termed the "Cambrian explosion," taking the name of the geological age in whose early part it occurred.
But it was not as rapid as an explosion: the changes seems to have happened in a range of about 30 million years, and some stages took 5 to 10 million years.
FISHING RESUMES OFF THE COAST OF FUKUSHIMA - - RADIATION IN FISH NOT A DETERRENT, APPARENTLY
Japan - Twenty vessels left Soma port before dawn Wednesday. A fisheries association spokesman told reporters, “We’re going out there to catch fish with the intention of selling them, so I’m really pleased.”  The federation claims that only fish which pass radiation safety checks will be put on sale.
Source: http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/fishing-operations-resume-off-coast-of-fukushima
Questions:
Will Japan be applying radiation safety level standards from before Fukushima exploded, or those that have been adjusted upwards  in the aftermath of the disaster.
Will this fish be exported?  Will it be used for farm animal feed or pet food if found too radioactive?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

RELATED

The United States and Canada have raised the radiation levels of what is considered safe.

They did that after high levels of Fukushima radiation hit the American and Canadian coast in 2011.  Safety levels were raised as radiation from that disaster continues to flow in this direction.

Last April the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) again approved higher radiation exposure levels for the general population.

As radiation rises in the environment, particularly as a result of the Fukushima disaster, with increasing amounts of radiation hitting our shores, our governments simply raise the safety level even higher.  In this way they can claim the air and the ocean water and ocean life are still "safe".

Activist PostIn regards to the changes to acceptable levels of radiation in water it should be noted that the EPA does not actually propose anything specific. Indeed, the EPA refuses to create a new standard for acceptable radiation levels in water.

UPDATE ON CAT NAMED HOPE WHO WAS SET ON FIRE - SHE IS STILL UNDER TREATMENT

From a report 2 days ago, Hope is still undergoing treatment for her burns.  Still suffering because of the sadistic actions of a human.

http://www.examiner.com/article/treatment-continues-for-burned-kitten-hope

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What I find most disturbing is that when I was using Google to find updates on Hope, I also found a significant number of reports about other cats being deliberately set on fire.
It's not just psychopaths who are hurting animals, but regular folks who have grown up playing video games where killing and setting people on fire are considered fun.
Since exercising their sadistic impulses on other people can get complicated, these criminals use helpless little animals to satisfy their cruel and warped inclinations.
This blog's September 15th, 2013 original report:
KITTEN NAMED HOPE SET ON FIRE BY OWNERS IS NOW RECOVERING
Hope's will to live got her through the ordeal, as well as unexpected human kindness.
Hope was found two weeks ago next to a dumptser in Inskter, Michigan. Her back and sides were burnt, and her body was emaciated, according to Hometown Life.
An 85-year-old woman took the 7-month-old kitten in and attempted to treat her for two weeks with no apparent results.
On Tuesday, the woman took Hope to nonprofit Tail Wagger's 1990, in Livonia, Michigan. 'We opened the carrier and stood in complete shock,' Laura Zain, founder of Tail Wagger's 1990, told The Huffington Post. 'It was the worst thing I've ever seen in 25 years of doing this. I've never seen something so sadistic, ever.'
Unable to treat the cat, Zain and Tail Wagger's 1990 vice president Judy Marinetti took the anival to nearby Sheehy Animal Hospital.
Dr Sharon Sheehy confirmed that even Hope's ears were burnt.
Zain told The Huffington Post that she could see Hope's will to live. 'I started petting her head, she immediately started purring and kneading her feet and giving me a sign, like, hey, I'm okay.'
Dr Sheehy and her vet tech Tracy Howard ran blood tests and performed surgery. Two hours later, Hope was cleaned up and given pain medication -- and will live.Hope will need another surgery, and possibly several others.
Zain has said it will take at least six months before she is able to adjust to home life -- and many more before she is to be adopted.  Contributions for her care are being accepted.
CALIFORNIA WIND FARM SEEKS PERMIT TO KILL EAGLES -- EAGLE SLAUGHTER IN OTHER WIND FARMS
A Solano County, Calif., wind farm would be the first renewable energy project in the nation allowed to kill eagles under a federal plan, a U.S. agency said.
Under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal, outlined in a draft environmental report released Thursday, the Shiloh IV Wind Project would be issued a golden eagle take permit for its 3,500-acre plant in the Montezuma Hills, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The plan would allow the company's 50 wind turbines to kill as many as five golden eagles in a five-year period in exchange for measures to protect the birds, including retrofitting 133 power poles to prevent electrocutions, the Chronicle said.
EAGLE SLAUGHTER IN WIND FARMS
Wind energy facilities have killed at least 67 golden and bald eagles in the last five years, but the figure could be much higher, according to a new scientific study by government biologists.
But at a minimum, the scientists wrote, wind farms in 10 states have killed at least 85 eagles since 1997, with most deaths occurring between 2008 and 2012, as the industry was greatly expanding.
Most deaths - 79 - were golden eagles that struck wind turbines. One of the eagles counted in the study was electrocuted by a power line.
Wind farms are clusters of turbines as tall as 30-story buildings, with spinning rotors as wide as a passenger jet’s wingspan. Though the blades appear to move slowly, they can reach speeds up to 170 mph at the tips, creating tornado-like vortexes.
PAKISTAN'S NEW ISLAND CREATED BY LATEST EARTHQUAKE EMITS TOXIC GAS THAT KILLS SEA LIFE
New island is 18 meters high and 600 meters off the coast is now emitting flammable gases.
Dead fish have been spotted floating on the surface of the waters surrounding the island and visitors have heard hissing noises from the escaping gas.
Richard Luckett a seismologist at the British Geological Survey said that these mud volcanoes are relatively common in this area on both land and sea.
They occur where there is a reservoir of loosely compacted sediments buried beneath harder, denser rock and a path is made to the surface.
There is a subducting plate boundary in this region where the Arabian plate is converging on the Eurasian plate at about 2cm a year and being pushed beneath it.
This is the same plate boundary responsible for the magnitude 7.7 earthquake.
Scientists believe gases associated with the melting at the plate boundary contribute to heating the mud in the reservoirs and making it more fluid.
This type island tend to disappear over time.
EVIL NAZI WOMEN IN NEW BOOK "HITLER'S FURIES"
Much is said that if the world were run by women there would be more peace, compassion and justice.
But reality tells us otherwise.
Headlines with stories about cruel women who abuse and even kill their own children are an everyday occurrence in our civilized world.
Women with political power can also be as ruthless as their male colleagues.
A new book tells the story of women who eagerly implemented the cruel and murderous dictates of the Nazi party.
DAILY MAIL:  The Nazi women who were every bit as evil as the men: From the mother who shot Jewish children in cold blood to the nurses who gave lethal injections in death camps
  • Chilling new book has exposed thousands of complicit German women
  • At least half a million witnessed and contributed to Hitler's terror
  • Have been dubbed the ‘primary witnesses of the Holocaust’
  • Secretaries typed the orders to kill and filed the details of massacres
  • Only a small number of women were called to account for their crimes
  • Book Hitler’s Furies by historian Professor Wendy Lower has unearthed the complicity of tens of thousands of German women — many more than previously imagined — in the sort of mass, monstrous, murderous activities that we would like to think the so-called gentler sex were incapable of.
    MYSTERIOUS PHYSICS AT WORK IN EARTH'S NEWLY DISCOVERED THIRD RADIATION RING
    Earlier this year, NASA scientists discovered apreviously unknown surprise circling Earth— an ephemeral third ring of radiation surrounding our planet.
    Now, some eight months later, UCLA scientists say they know what’s going on — and it’s unlike anything physicists have ever seen before.
    According to the new research, which was headed by UCLA’s Yuri Shprits, the third radiation zone exists at what the scientists are calling “ultrarelativistic energies,” while consisting of an additional medium narrow belt that lasts for about a month.
    This middle band is comprised of extremely energetic particles known as ultrarelativistic electrons — electrons so energetic that they move close to the speed of light.
    The region the belts occupy range from about 620 to 32,000 miles (1,000 to 50,000 km) above the Earth.
    Disturbingly, ultrarelativistic electrons pose a severe danger to satellites and spacecraft.
    Because they pack so much motion (again, we’re talking about electrons that are moving at close to the speed of light), they pack a hell of a lof of energy — energy that could disrupt or even destroy critical satellites. It could even disrupt the proposed space elevator.
    Research like this could eventually lead to measures to protect both space equipment and astronauts.
    FLESH EATING DRUG KROKODIL NOW IN USE IN THE UNITED STATES
    Home-made drug Krokodil severely disfigures and rots away the users' skin making them resemble zombies.
    Krokodil, a flesh-eating drug which first surfaced in Russia more than a decade ago, has reportedly been found in the United States.
    Similar to morphine or heroin, krokodil is made by mixing codeine with substances like gasoline, paint thinner, oil or alcohol.
    That mixture is then injected into a vein, potentially causing an addict's skin to turn greenish, scaly and eventually rot away.
    Users of krokodil — or desomorphine — had previously only been found in large numbers in Russia.
    "This is really frightening," Dr. Aaron Skolnik, a toxicologist at Banner Good Samaritan Poison and Drug Information Center told MyFoxPhoenix.com.
    "This is something we hoped would never make it to the U.S. because it's so detrimental to the people who use it."
    LIST OF EMERGING COUNTRIES WITH NUCLEAR POWER AMBITIONS
    These past three years alone we witnessed a series of regime changes in highly unstable countries in the Middle East.
    Governments fell like dominoes in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, while others tottered under the onslaught of the Arab Spring.
    Syria is still in the midst of a war and we don't know who will end up owning the biological and chemical weapons arsenal in that country.  (The deal to hand over WMD now only applies to chemical weapons, not biological ones.  Those Assad gets to keep.)
    But that is not enough.  These countries also have high ambitions to become nuclear powers.
    Once a government gets access to energy nuclear reactors, acquiring nuclear weapons is only a matter of time.
    And then there's the issue of nuclear proliferation.  Pakistan exported nuclear technology to North Korea, for example.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    So here is an updated list of how things stand right now, with a list of emerging nations pursuing nuclear technology - often eagerly provided by western countries such as Canada.

  • Over 45 countries are actively considering embarking upon nuclear power programs.
  • These range from sophisticated economies to developing nations.
  • The front runners after Iran are UAE, Turkey, Vietnam, Belarus, Poland and Jordan.

    PAKISTAN EARTHQUAKE SO STRONG IT CREATES NEW ISLAND - AND THESE PEOPLE HAVE NUKES!

    Never mind the territorial issues between Pakistan and India.

    Never mind that the political tensions in this part of the world are themselves a powder keg and you never know who will end up with a nuclear arsenal and other weapons of mass destruction.

    There is the issue of Pakistan having nuclear weapons in a country with unstable geology.

    Earthquakes are very common in Pakistan, Turkey, and Iran, among many other countries.

    At this moment Jordan, Egypt and others ecological and political unstable countries have been promised nuclear reactors by the USA and Canada - even as Fukushima becomes a permanent nuclear volcano, poisoning the Pacific Ocean.

    Deadly Pakistan quake creates new island

    A new island appeared off Pakistan after a deadly 7.7-magnitude quake struck Tuesday afternoon in Baluchistan province's Awaran district -- a dirt-poor expanse of land that is roughly the size of Wales"

    The island, which is up to 100 feet high and 200 feet wide, surfaced after the earthquake hit parts of Baluchistan," senior local administration official Tufail Baluch told AFP.

    He said a similar island had appeared at the same place in the sea about 60 years ago but disappeared after some time, meaning the current island is unlikely to last long.

    The new island was created by the pressure of the earthquake, seismologist John Armbruster told NBC News.

    He said such mud formations are a known occurrence following strong earthquakes of magnitude of seven or eight.

    ENCHANTING RIVER HAS MYSTERIOUS AND UNKNOWN SOURCE

    With its tranquil blue waters, palm trees and rock pools, this idyllic river in the Philippines is nothing short of paradise.

    But the Hinatuan River, which runs on the island of Mindanao - the second largest and southernmost in the region - is no ordinary hideaway.

    Because the salt water river seems to have no source.

    The exact source of the beautiful paradise - nicknamed the Enchanted River because of its unknown beginnings - is surrounded in mystery and has never been determined.

    Due to its close proximity to the sea, some believe the idyll was created when seawater flowed through long tunnels and caverns deep below the ground, finally resurfacing at the spring - which is 50ft deep in areas.

    But others offer slightly different solutions - including one urban legend that suggests the river was created by fairies and pixies.

    The river, considered one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in the Philippines flows straight into the Pacific Ocean.

    EARLY HUMANS WIPED OUT GIANT ELEPHANTS AND OTHER MEGAFAUNA

    Human capacity for destruction started early on, even before Neanderthals.

    Excavations in Kent, England, have revealed deposits containing elephant remains along with the tools of slaughter.

    Researchers also found other species now extinct from the area dating from around 420,000 years ago.

    The pre-historic elephant was twice the size of today's African variety and up to four times the weight of family car.

    Although there is no direct evidence of how this particular animal met its end, the discovery of flint tools close to the carcass confirm butchery for its meat, probably by a group of at least four individuals.

    Research by University of Southampton archaeologist Dr Francis Wenban-Smith suggests that early humans, who lived thousands of years before Neanderthals, were able to work together in groups to hunt and slaughter animals as large as the prehistoric elephant.

    The site revealed  a deep sequence of deposits containing the elephant remains, along with numerous flint tools and a range of other species such as wild aurochs, extinct forms of rhinoceros and lion, Barbary macaque, beaver, rabbit, various forms of vole and shrew, and a diverse assemblage of snails.
